NEW MEXICO TOUR

After a prolonged period of soul-searching and reinvention, through the pandemic and beyond, Agile Rascal returned to touring.  This time with a brand new crop of talented artists, and a new way of doing things.  Our old model of spending five weeks in residence to collectively devise a play, followed by six weeks on tour, just wasn't feasible for the schedules of our working artist collaborators.  So we scrapped devising a new play, and sought out a script from a new, talented playwright, eventually stumbling upon Anooj Bhandari, and his beautiful play, Chai Chai.

As an ensemble, we spent two weeks at the magical Peñasco Theatre modifying and rehearsing our play, then toured the piece for two weeks. Shifting our model from two months of devising and touring to a month-long endeavor to accommodate the realities of artists' busy schedules made for a short, but powerful, time in New Mexico: the result was a whimsical tour across desert landscapes, with sweet connections to the land, waters, and people of New Mexico, with six performances that invited community-members to remember what it felt like to be a Giant.

THE PLAY:  CHAI CHAI BY ANOOJ BHANDARI

At the intersection of "this way" and "that way," a Giant sits at a Chai Stall, a Matchmaker wonders if she is losing her touch, and a very quiet character suddenly has a lot to say.

Guided by a mythical chorus of fly aunties, Chai Chai is a play about remembrance, memory, and what happens when we begin to forget.
